About Us
We (Simon and Karen) have lived in Haselbury Plucknett since 1998, loving village life and making firm friends over the years. Our two sons have lived here their whole lives and it was when they were due to leave home for university that I started thinking of building a temporary dwelling in the small orchard at the front of our property for holiday let. We had originally met through agriculture as did Fred & Esme, the couple who built our home, and so a shepherd's hut seemed an appropriate style of accommodation for our guests, as it united our two love stories.

Simon is pretty clever with his hands, I don't mind getting stuck in as well, and so a basic Shepherd's Hut kit was ordered from Blackdown Shepherd Huts and away we went. We managed to complete the whole project, from delivery of the kit to our first guests arriving, within 5 months. We worked during weekends, evenings, and the occasional time off work. You'll see in the images below that there has been a lot of cutting, hammering, painting, and fitting, but we're so pleased with the results and hope you will come, stay and enjoy the space we've created.

We have just spent a relaxing night at Esme's Escape and had a wonderful time. Karen and Simon are lovely hosts and nothing was too much trouble. They kindly heated the wood fired hot tub for our arrival as we were only staying for 1 night so we could make the most of it and it was lush! There were little touches that really make it a special stay including a homemade cake, a breakfast hamper & all the interesting history on Esme and her family. The bed was soooo comfy too. We had a lovely time and would love to return one day. Highly recommended stay!

We spent seven nights here on our honeymoon in July 2023. The village is lovely, very English, and very quiet.The hut and its garden are perfect - you are virtually hidden from view from anyone else, unless there is someone on top of the church steeple. The hut itself is very comfortable, and beautifully set up with a 1940s theme linking to the history of Esme herself. There is plenty of space to live and sleep although we were out most days exploring. The shower and toilet are more than adequate, and there is a small induction hob and a fridge, so basic catering is easy to do - all pans etc are provided. The garden has a decked area under cover if you wish to sit out even in the rain, plus the woodfired hot tub was used nearly every afternoon. The wood fired pizza oven was new to... It's not to hard to get to, we came down the M5 from NW England. Once you're there you are close to RNAS Yeovilton. Monkey World, the Tank Museum, Maiden Castle and the Jurassic coast are less than an hour away. There are big supermarkets in Crewkerne 10 minutes away and that's a nice little town to explore in its own right. Eating and drinking: the White Horse is great and is two minutes walk. It does have limited opening hours, but the food and drink are most excellent. It's a family run business, and gets very busy over the weekend, especially for Sunday lunches, so best to book (which you can do online easily). Haselbury Mill is a pub/restuarant which is open all week long, the walk is about 15 minutes, just watch out for traffic once the pavement stops. Again - a charming location, good food and drink, and a collection of decaying antique vehicles to look at. It's the little touches that really made our stay so wonderful. A handbaked cake left in the hut for us, and the makings of an English breakfast in the fridge with a pint of milk, so if you didn't buy any provisions you could still at least have a cup of tea and breakfast on the first morning of your stay. We loved talking with Simon and Karen, fabulous and interesting people, and of course we loved Yogi the little dog! Thank you for making good memories for us! Simon and Liz Walton

Quite simply one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. My Husband and I stayed for two nights last weekend and had the most amazingly relaxing time ever. The hut is absolutely gorgeous, so much thought and love has gone into the theme and this is clear to see. Exploring all of the pieces and using the authentic 1940’s cutlery was a highlight for me. The garden is stunning, and so peaceful, watching the bees in the foxgloves fascinated me, and backdrop of the church just utterly completes the setting. We loved using all of the wood fired elements, particularly the hot tub and pizza oven. Breakfast is provided on the first morning and this too was done beautifully using local produce. Cooking it in the pizza oven was great fun too, and sitting down to enjoy it surrounded by the sounds of birds chirping in the sun...

Thank you so much for having us to stay. We really had the most wonderful time together. The hut was beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. It really was peaceful and quiet and you've really created a beautiful space. The lovely covered area outside meant we could sit and enjoy the mornings and evening despite the rain! The locally sourced produce for our breakfast was phenomenal and despite setting the smoke alarm off twice (oops! Don't blame me I wasn't the chef!) It tasted fantastic. We made great use of the hot tub, pizza oven and the log fire! Marshmallows were a wonderful extra touch. We also used the Bluetooth speaker to listen to music and connected to our ipad to watch movies! The robes and bed socks were an extra treat which really added a touch of coziness. Just spent an amazing weekend at Esme's Escape. The hosts Karen and Simon have really thought of everything to make it an enjoyable weekend and you really don't need to bring anything except a change of clothes and bathing suit for the hot tub. We made full use of all the facilities including pizza oven and hot tub and log fires. We woke up with frost on the ground but we're toasty warm in the hut. The breakfast ingredients and little extras like cake, loaf bread, mini milk bottles, marshmallows and marmalade were all much appreciated. The local white horse pub was very enjoyable too. It wasn't as rural as we had hoped but was quiet and relaxing and unimposing and we would certainly recommend a stay. Thank you
